Gramophones
As the wind up gramophone became more popular in the early 1900s so did the demand for needles.

Gramophones had normal volume knobs and the loudness of the music is controlled by the thickness of the Needle, thin, medium, and thick needles supplied soft, medium and loud music.

Since it was necessary to replace the Needle every time 78 rpm record is played, needles were typically sold in tins containing either 100 and 200.
