Rods remained the same until the 19th century, when treated bamboo canes were cut and planed to form fly rods of exceptional quality.

fine pieces such as an HL Leonard Trout Rod, can command as much as £350-£450.

The first written record of reels, also called winches, is in Thomas Barkers the art of angling, published in 1651.

Metal reels are more durable than wooden ones, which is why there is such a wide range available .
Many of the finest designs and mechanisms were developed in the late 19th  and 20th century, including multiplying, half crank, Cage, and free school clutch reels.

A rare Allcock aerial match centre pin reel listed for only one season in 1939 to 1940 can command places from £2500-£3000 in top condition.

same era, is only worth about 100 £250, reels marked with a makers name are more desirable.

Both Allcock and Hardy brothers are names synonymous with quality fishing gear, and their equipment is sought after.


A hardy Longstone sea centre pin reel with wooden ebonised drum will set you back between  £250-£350.

A variant hardy St George alloy Trout fly a real in the specialist auction recently fetched £1000.

You can pick up a kentons cone centre pin reel with mahogany drum for a modest £500.
