FRUITY WHITE WINE
If
you don't like your whites too pallid and wishy-washy, but you hate
oaky, powerful whites, then It can
sometimes seem hard to find those 'in-between' whites, as we all
appear to be drowning in a sea of rich Chardonnay or weedy
Liebfraumilch.
Here, then, are the medium-bodied whites, many with
ripe fruit and a heady perfume, but very few of them oaky. The wines
that feature on these pages are either overtly fruity, packed with
juicy, succulent flavour, like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or they
have a spicy hint, like Alsace Gewurztraminer. These wines have
zoomed back into vogue of late, often replacing Chardonnay as a more
refreshing type of white that still packs a punch.
And as we shall
see, these wines are amazingly food-friendly, matching the most
trendy dishes around.You
won't be impressed by everything that falls into this category.
All
styles of wine bring the odd let-down, and in the case of these, it
usually comes in the form of a disappointingly * dilute bottle which
fails to deliver a loud blast of character. Or it can be because the
wine is too flabby; it lacks firm acidity to give a fresh streak to
all that fruit and spice. Then there is the level of sweetness -
often a tricky problem with white wine.
FRUITY WHITE WINE |
Straw-coloured,
heading towards gold hints, sometimes a little green. Not as pale as
the light whites, but less richly coloured than heavily oaked or many
sweet wines.
Medium -exactly
viscous, but not nearly thin as the light whites.
AROMA
.OF
FRUITY WHITE WINE
Terrific! Fruity whites have citrus or tropical fruits or apple
leaping out of the glass. Grass, green pepper, even tomato leaves can
be found, too. Sauvignon Blanc can be very pungent, with ripe
gooseberry, asparagus and even a hint of tom-cat or sweat. Spicy
whites have a heady, exotic perfume. A scent of roses is often found,
along with cake spices (nutmeg, ginger), lychees... even Turkish
delight.
FLAVOUR

FRUITY WHITE WINE
Lots of interesting nuances similar to those found on the scent,
although good fresh fruit should be at the core. Should have a clean,
crisp finish.
