Collecting Guinness

The slogan "Guinness is Good for You" started life as a clever little ditty dreamt up to promote the famous Irish stout,

but today it also reflects the healthy finances of many Guinness collectors. Whatever happens in the brewing sector, Guinness memorabilia stock is in high demand and prices are going just one way - up.

As you might expect for a company which has marketed itself so well for so many years, Guinness itself has been quick to turn this collecting trend to its advantage.

The company now sells a range of T-shirts, sweatshirts, glasses, pens, Leer mats and other souvenirs for the new collectors market. Corgi's 1993 Guinness Tanker model which originally retailed at £25.99 now fetches £100+ among collectors.

My advice to any collector is stay away from the reproductions, there's plenty of mixed smaller items which are ideal for those starting out, and they're proper genuine Guinness, so you're unlikely to lose your money."

Most collectors have pieces in their collection which are either very unusual or have been picked up for knock-down prices.

The larger antique fairs which are often held across the country mid-week are just one of the areas  to snoop out a bargain. "

A year ago I went to a big outdoor trade fair near Lincoln when I came across this large enamel Guinness advertising sign sticking out from under one of the dealer's caravans.

I paid just £70 cash for it and saw the same thing two weeks later in an antique shop  for £280.

Then, just three months later I was talking to a Guinness dealer at Newark who offered me £1,000 cash on the spot for it

. That gave me something to think about I can tell you, but at the end of the day I couldn't bear the thought of  selling it.

So you can still pick up bargains, even now not everyone knows Guinness is good for you!"
